The month of February WELCA collected food for ECCCM.
Sardis Women of the ELCA
“As a community of women created in the image of God,
called to discipleship in Jesus Christ,
and empowered by the Holy Spirit,
we commit ourselves to grow in faith, affirm our gifts,
support one another in our callings, engage in ministry and action,
and promote healing and wholeness
in the church, the society, and the world.”
This is the purpose of the Women of the ELCA at Sardis. We have been called by Jesus to be disciples to all nations, grow in our faith so that we may serve others by the Spirit’s power, and reach out to others in ministry and action. Our three active committees are Action, Growth, and
Community—all reflecting the very elements of Sardis’ mission statement.
Action – Sardis Women are an active group! During 2015 we collected food during February to show our love to those in need, gathered treats for our college students, decorated the church at Easter with the beautiful lilies given by the congregation and prepared the cross for the new life of flowers brought on Easter morning. Along with the LMIM’s help, we celebrated our mother’s at the annual Daughter of God banquet, as women brought special antique items that special women in their lives had possessed. We celebrated our fathers by planning and serving breakfast on Father’s Day, and honored the residents of Trinity Ridge in November with a birthday party. We organized the collection of medicine bottles for the people of Malawi, the eight poorest nation on earth. Tableside “care” kits were taken to the shut-ins and the visits were appreciated more than the items. We made baked goods for the Youth Fundraiser,
Christmas program party, and hosted the Confirmation reception. We also helped organize and served a delicious meal (our meals are the best, they’ve said!) to the Fred T. Foard varsity football team. It is so rewarding to see the joy on these young men’s faces! We organize the ordering of poinsettias for
Christmas memorials/honorariums, along with helping the LMIM decorate the Chrismon tree with the beautiful chrismons that our ladies have made.
Growth – We feed our soul along with our bodies. Our monthly meetings are enhanced by Bible studies, where we focused on bold women of the Bible. We participated in the Spring and Fall gatherings of our Catawba conference, where we provided monetary support to Safe Harbor Rescue Mission and Exodus House, both Hickory organizations. We learn from our sister organizations, sharing ideas and activities. Several women in our group serve on Committees of NCWELCA, and Nena Babb was appointed to the Board of the NC WELCA to fill a resignation for one year. All women are encouraged to attend our meetings and bible studies.
Community – We gather to study, fellowship, and support one another. Our Sardis women are instrument in serving the grieving families by providing a meal at the death of our members. Group meetings provides opportunities for women to become more active in supporting and valuing each other. We encourage all women to participate in Women of the ELCA functions. We appreciate all the support that all the women of Sardis give to our activities. Together we can fulfill our purpose at the top of the page. Won’t you come join us in 2016?
